Recovering Data From the Hard Drive of a Laptop Onto a Desktop PC

When you are not able to repair an "unbootable" laptop hard drive, you can save the data it contains to a desktop computer with the use of the "slave drive" recovery method. If the drive of the laptop has not broken down mechanically, and the disk is "readable" - you will be able to conserve the important data on your drive.

1. Separate the battery from the laptop.

2. Next, take out the drive carefully, taking care of the stands that safeguard it.

3. Switch off the personal computer. Remove all connections of cable on the back. Also, remove side cover of the chassis.

4. Find the cable that connects to the drive. Inspect this cable. You will see another plastic connector in it. Connect a laptop to the IDE adaptor. Set adapter to work as "Slave drive". Connect hard drive of laptop to the last end of adapter. After connecting the hard drive to the PC, put one more cable into the available ports on motherboard. Plug last end of SATA cable in the drive of laptop.

5. Boot the computer after connecting rear cables. Using the mouse, right click on 'Start' and then select Explore. Check for the laptop's drive in the listings. It appears in the form of new drives.

6. Copy any documents on the drive of laptop in a folder on the PC.

7. Switch off desktop computer and remove all rear cables once more. Also, unplug the hard drive of laptop from external case of hard drive and replace side cover on desktop. Now plug in all rear cables and boot it once again.

8. Remove the adapter from the drive of laptop, replace the old one with a new one, and reinstall operating system on hard drive.

9. Copy the saved files from desktop onto a USB drive for transferring them back to the new or repaired laptop drive.
