Netbooks have been selling like crazy for a little while now, and you have to admit, it's not hard to see the appeal. Laptops that weigh around the same as a Macbook Air, but cost just a fraction at around $300 (give or take) and can be taken anywhere... it's totally understandable.
Full-blown computers costing as much as PDAs and smartphones are definitely an interesting proposition, but why am predicting the demise of these must-have computers?
Size is one reason. The very same reason that people consider this computers to be so portable is the first nail in the coffin. UMPCs failed for the same reason, and as soon as most people buy netbooks, they realize that they are too small to work on, because of two major reasons.
Screen resolution - With the diminutive screen resolution they offer, users have to constantly scroll around to see web pages and programs. I've even encountered programs where I couldn't click OK or cancel buttons at the bottom, and there's no solution to this problem other than connecting to a external display.
Small keyboard & trackpad - With the best keyboards offering a keyboard that is advertised to be 92% the size of a full-size keyboard, being able to use a netbook comfortably is not really possible for anyone. This is further worsened by the pathetic trackpads that "just" fit onto the surface.
But these reasons aren't alone. The Atom CPU was created for MIDs/UMPCs but found a comfortable home in netbooks, but is, at best, equivalent to a Pentium 3. Pentium 3s were around way back in the 90s, and we're almost in 2010. Obviously, this CPU, the incapable graphics chips, the small amount of RAM and slow subsystem don't allow for even reasonable use of modern programs.
The absolute majority of people start to dislike netbooks after a little while of owning them, so repeat purchases as well as demand both will inevitably drop. What will replace them? Why the next big thing of course!
