Laptop DC Power Jack Repair

The DC power jack in any DC appliance, such as a laptop computer, is the connector through which one would connect the power adapter to the device. Since this is a small part that takes quite a bit of stress from having the plug pushed in and pulled out at a variety of angles, it will likely over time come loose from the laptop's motherboard.

When the DC jack comes loose or is broken, the laptop will no longer receive a good solid power connection. The user will often find that the plug can be wiggled to cause the laptop to get or lose power in certain directions. A broken or loose DC jack can cause further damage to the laptop motherboard due to heat being created by the poor electrical connection on the board.

The DC jack is soldered to the motherboard of most laptop computers. In many cases the DC jack can be resoldered to the motherboard, but most of the time the constant wiggling of the jack to get a good connection has damaged the inside of the DC jack. Most repair professionals would recommend a new DC jack be mounted on the laptop motherboard rather than trying to simply resolder the old DC jack.

Repairing (more accurately stated, replacement) of the DC power jack in laptops is something most laptop repair centers don't really want to do. It is a specialty service requiring the technician be skilled in PC board soldering and desoldering. Even the manufacturers do not want to deal with DC jack replacement. They prefer to simply replace the laptop's motherboard for upwards of $800 in some cases.
