Laptop Battery Information

If you have recently decided to buy a laptop computer or have one and want some information about what to do to keep laptop battery in prime condition then go no further. This article will give you advice on what to do to make sure that your battery will be able to hold a full charge for as long as it is possible. Most laptop batteries will stay in condition, if looked after correctly, for about 1000 charge cycles although most people that I know with laptops do not get anywhere near this amount out of them. There are a few simple reasons for this and some of them will be explained below.

You first have to find out what sort of battery is in your laptop. There are four main types that are around today although some are more common than others. The oldest type is the Nickel Cadmium which is known as the NiCd or NiCad. This one isn't used as often anymore. The other types are the Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), the Lithium Polymer (Li-po), and the Nickel Metal Hydride. The Lithium Polymer laptop is gaining more and more momentum as the battery of choice as it offers the best power to weight ratio.

There are many factors that will affect how long a laptop battery can successfully hold a charge for. Some of them include the age of the battery, the condition it is in, and what sort of programs the user is running on their laptop. Some batteries will lose their charge as they get older, this is called memory degradation. Below are a few steps to make sure that you receive the most out of your battery.

Make sure that when your laptop is not plugged in that you do not run any external or media devices such as a CD player. Because this is a mechanical device it will chew through your battery really fast. This is because it has to physically spin the CD, and this will use a lot more power than if it had to access the data from the hard drive.

If the battery in your computer is a nickel metal hydride or a nickel cadmium then it will experience memory degradation over time. To lessen the effects of this, make sure that you run the battery down to empty every time. Also ensure that you fully recharge the battery every time you recharge it.

Follow a few of these simple steps will help to increase the amount of life that you can get out of your battery and also help to keep your battery in prime condition.
